Concerns with Using Basement for Storage

6/11/2020 (Permalink)

If you use your basement as storage it is important that you know a few things that are likely to happen if you don't take proper steps to avoid them. The cold and damp foundation of your home is the perfect base for mold and other such bacteria to gather and grow on, because of this when you place biodegradable boxes and totes on the ground they are likely to gather these bacteria and grow mold or other such things on them.

To help avoid this from occurring the best possible thing to do is to store your boxes on metal or plastic shelving instead of on the floor itself. This will keep the boxes far enough away from the floor to prevent the bacteria from spreading to them and being able to create patches of mold on them. The boxes should be a minimum of 18 inches off the ground to help prevent this from occurring.
